  • The Dream

I was selected to compete in the Triwizard tournament. I told Dumbledoor there must be some mistake. You see, I am not magical, not at all. However, once you are selected, you must compete, nothing can be done. Luckily,  Dumbledoor had a plan. He always does.

He decided that Edward Cullen was to take me shopping and that we were to purchase numerous frilly white dresses (for me of course, not Edward). The purpose of this was to gain the "sympathy vote" from the audience (a new feature of the Tournament, the audience has some say in who lives and who dies). Dumbledoor was convinced that if I maintained the  "innocent yet brave muggle"  image I'd do pretty well, I might even survive! So I went shopping with Edward, and it took so long that I was late for the opening ceremony. (of course, Edward, with his lightning speed, was not)

The first challenge involved no magic (lucky for me). It was solely courage related. All we had to do was hold out our  left arm over a pit with a werewolf in it, and move it before the werewolf bit it off. The trick was to keep the arm there until after the Werewolf lunged for it.  If you moved it too soon, you were given low marks. If you moved too late....Well, that was worse.

Of course, I was first, and of course, I moved my arm too soon.

Oh well. I wasn't really trying to win...just live.

Edward went next. Surprisingly (and rather uncharacteristically, I might add) he left his arm in too long and the werewolf bit it.....HARD. Edward and I had gotten to be friends, so I decided to take him to a hippy store on Market St. (downtown Chattanooga) to see if they had any natural remedies that might prevent lycanthropy. Turns out that Edward's uncle, a werewolf himself (sorry Stephanie Meyer) had such a remedy. However, when Edward consumed the liquid he transformed into Gilbert Blyth (Anne of Green Gables). Edward was horribly distraught about this, mostly because he was afraid they wouldn't let him finish the Triwizard tournament if he was Gilbert Blyth. So then we had to look for a cure for that, of course. After wandering through a few shops, we found one where the owners said they could help. They took us to a musical room with a huge pumpkin-shaped drum in it that sounded like a guitar when one played it....

    Then I woke up.

I agree with whoever first said that literary characters live on in your imagination forever. Dang. Hopefully I'll be able to finish the competition one of these nights.

  • The Invisible

We walk in crowds under heavy city lights and noises

    Fierce and Bustling

    Shuffling, pounding, chittering

    One coheasively diverse force

A million bees caught in a bumble

In the corners they stand shouting

    Asking for help

    Screaming

We do not look up, or turn our heads

    To us they are invisible

"What if they really needed help?" A small voice says.

"No." argues one. "They did this to themselves. Only the accursed become the invisible"

    "Maybe" replies the first, hopefully.

    "Maybe"

And there is no fighting as we walk on past.

  • A couple of poems that sort of spilled out for no reason- the first while I was at work the other day, the second happened a while ago but I revised it a little (it's actually on here a couple entries back)

    Intensity

    Boldly bright

    fierce and cutting

light pushes through my skin and forces

    me to open

    to unyeildingly unfold

    undeniably forced

lovely wings with too sharp edges

    and grins painfully wide

    unconcealable knashing teeth

    A thousand tiny kisses

    Hot rain splashes

    First pouring then slushing

    each hitting and steaming

    on my cold skin

one by one, there are a thousand

    Tiny kisses

    Eyes open

    For the first time, awake

Though I am blind in the half light

I follow the lost crumbs in the wilderness that you have placed

One by one, there are a thousand

  • 35 Things I Learned Freshman Year

    1. I have learned to be more confident this year, comfortable with who I am

    2. Remember this- buy cheap, white, towels next time-save the fancy monogrammed ones someone gave you for when you're on your own, otherwise they may get permanantly bleached by your roomate's acne medicine.

    3. Figure out how you best deal with conflict before the conflict occurs

    4. Give-but set boundries

    5. Don't try to be cool-just be cool

    6. Buy books on E-bay

    7. Stuff accumulates-start by bringing the bare minimum next time

    8. Gym=stress reliever

    9. I like hiking alone, but maybe most of the time I should let lots of people know when I'm going and where I am and find an occasional hiking buddy so my parents don't worry about me

    10. Bigger fridge

    11. Less movies-never watched half the ones I brought

    12. Two all-nighters in a row=sick,sick

    13. I am a caffeine addict, but I'm strangely proud of it

    14. Studying psychology has permanantly changed the way I view the world, and I don't think I'll ever be quite right again.

    15. College guys flirt like crazy, but a lot of times they don't mean anything by it. It's not worth over-analysing: if they want something more, they should make their intentions clear.

    16. Also, I've decided not to pay much attention to guys in general in the romantic sense-if it's meant to become something, then it will have to be made super clear, and then Ill have to pray about it and decide if it's what I really want. I see this all the time and choose to say "NO" to husband hunting.

    17. OMLETS=motivation for getting up early.

    18. YouTube=Friendly, neighborhood procrastinating and bonding device

    19. CAR

    20. I just realised that none of my guy friends (at college) actually know THAT much about me (factual stuff-they know my personality). But my guy friends at home do. IE: I've done ballet for 13 years or.....I've been camping my whole life. Weird, huh?

    21. Sometimes girls just want to be your friend..........and they don't know you. And then one day you find yourselves exchanging squeals and hugs with this person that you don't actually know all that well.....which makes you appreciate.....

    22. The people that come into your room uninvited, plop down in the middle of your floor, make themselves some tea, and start telling you about their day. (love it!)

    23. Sometimes staying up talking is more important than schoolwork

    24. Sometimes schoolwork is more important than staying up talking

    25. Extreme sleep deprivation is a lot like being drunk

    26. People aren't ever who you originally assume they are

    27. People can hear you through the walls in my building

    28. 1920's window:easily converted into window seat making in the perfect day-dreaming perch

    29. Work hard and it will ALWAYS get done somehow

    30. Never give too much away too quickly

    31. Some people deserve to be let in

    32. I learned I actually do know how to flirt, and that I don't like doing it. Also sometimes that I can't seem to help it.

    33. Stupid blushing

34.In presentations that seem doomed to failure=be confident and try to add funny pictures into your powerpoint.

    35. Anything can become an obsession=so be wise in your choice...choose God. Good things can become bad things when they become idols

  • So.....this is about the time someone pops out with a camera....

    2:40 a.m. and I'm in the commons with a Vault head-bangin to Linkin Park's "What I've Done".

A Word document is open and full of writing. I can't tell if it's coherent.

36 page psychology essay exam. 50% of my grade. It's sad when you have to pull an all-nighter so you can be in a good starting place for tomorrow night's all-nighter. I have this exam due, a religious utopia project, a PE paper and some Excel charts that go with it (that I don't understand, but it shouldn't be too bad), and a Psychology book review over a book I haven't finished yet. This week.

On the other hand. College is defined by this. And as tired as I'll be tomorrow, the adrenaline is fun.

Love to all the other people who have shared these experiences.

    Oh...and Yael Naim. very cool.

About Me

  • My name is Kathryn, but if you called me that on the street, I probably would not respond, because no one ever calls me "Kathryn": I go by "Katie". There is really nothing I can do about this fact, as it has been integral to my life since I was a small child. I have, however, often wished that I was called "Kathryn" (with an occasional flirtatious "Kate" thrown in), as it seems to me a name that would more readily lend itself to the character of some heroine or great romantic figure. I don't believe I've ever written as much about my name, however, I have no idea how to fill in the "about me" slot. To know someone, you have to know them... People can't be summed up in a tiny blank space....But names can. Now that you know my name, maybe you can learn "About me" for real. Leave me a comment, I like learning about people too. Don't forget to say your name! :-)
